Summer 2026 Newsletter

Hi All,

Here is a quick update on some fun recent shows and sessions.

First, a last minute show at The Grape in Ventura this Saturday Aug 15. Advance tickets on sale now: https://the-grape.turntabletickets.com/p/46533

GK Soul/Jazz Party 8:00PM (2 sets). Gregg Karukas - Hammond B3 Organ, Miles Jensen – Guitar, Aidan Farrell - Sax, Joel Taylor – Drums. Surprise guests.

Always fun to play the real Hammond B3 at The Grape, and I'm happy to introduce a burning, young sax talent from right here in Westlake, Aidan Farrell, who recently had a guest spot at the Gordon Goodwin Phat Band tribute in Thousand Oaks.

On Monday, Aug 17, I'll play the venerable club, The Baked Potato with guitarist Dave Hill, who used to play in my band before he moved back to Buffalo, NY. Back in the '80's, I played the Spud quite a bit with Phil Upchurch, Pat Kelley's group and our band Hip Pocket. It hasn't changed........

Summer has been nice and hot, playing a variety of local shows: Soul/Jazz Organ Party and piano trio; and also Yoshi's Oakland with Peter White and down to Temecula at Thornton Winery with Peter and Vincent Ingala. I did a nice, live tracking session last week with Freddie Washington, Paul Brown producing, Michael White, Shane Theriot and Lenny Castro for new sax player Cali Jones. 2 takes and we're done!! Then I did a few overdubs on Wurlie and Hammond...

I'll be heading to London in September at Pizza Express, Soho the 18th and 19th. After the shows, we will spend the week exploring the city and outskirts (Bath). My son, Stevie, moved from Seattle and has been living and working in London since December so we'll have some good time to be "tourists" together.

Back to the East Coast in October, planning a cross-country road trip in my RV for shows in Annapolis, Charlotte and a special reunion of The Starliners - The award winning Bowie, MD High School jazz band. Joining that band just after 8th grade kickstarted my jazz education (self-taught), and led to meeting Airmen of Note lead alto sax player Tim Eyermann and many incredible players who came to our rehearsals to give little clinics. After Tim got out of the Service, we started our jazz/fusion band East Coast Offering together and it was the real start of my career as a composer. Tim could sight read anything I would write, and we also became the first-call session guys for lots of jingle writers and songwriters in DC. A few years later after I had moved to California, my song, "Walkin' With You" became the title cut of East Coast Offering's MCA LP.

More Holiday Jazz Shows are in the works for December, especially a return to Spaghettini Dec 5, Sierra Madre Playhouse December 13 and Libretto in Paso Robles December 18. Ticket links below.

That's it for now, stay cool. GK www.karukas.com
